ISO 14001: 2015 new standard officially released

Durée: 2011-05-14

ISO 14001, the world's first widely adopted international standard for environmental management systems, has helped more than 300,000 organizations around the world improve their environmental performance. At present, the standard has undergone the first major revision since its official release in 1996. The new standard was officially released yesterday (September 15).

The new standards ensure that they continue to help organizations improve business processes, save costs, and address future environmental challenges. Environmental experts from more than 70 countries participated in the revision, and the revised standards incorporate a series of updates designed to help organizations deal with changing business conditions - from climate change to supply chain management.

ISO 14001 provides a framework for organizations to reduce environmental impact, waste, and energy while the business grows. ISO 14001 can also help companies become more innovative, improve management system processes, meet regulatory requirements, and enhance the credibility of companies in the eyes of investors, customers and the public. Ultimately, this new standard will help companies stay in sync with changes in the environmental arena and ensure they are always at the forefront.

The changes of ISO 14001:2015 include:

1. The new High-Level Structure (HLS) adopts common management terms, definitions, titles, and texts for all management systems to facilitate easy integration when implementing multiple management systems.

2. For senior management, it is a new opportunity to further ensure that environmental management is integrated into core business processes and objectives.

3. Refocus on the risks faced by the organization (eg, price fluctuations in raw materials) and the opportunities offered by these risks (higher resource efficiency)

4. New thinking about the organizational environment to help them understand their environment and their impact on the environment, as well as the impact of environmental issues (such as climate change) on the business itself.
